The Rotary Year for The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street began on 1st July 2016.

On Friday 1st July 2016 - we inducted our new Club President: Rotarian Brian Straughan for the year 2016 - 2017.
President Brian's chosen charity for the forthcoming Rotary year is:
  • Rotary Foundation (Rotary's own charity). The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, education, and alleviation of poverty throughout the world.
Throughout the year The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street will be organising events to raise funds for the President's chosen charity, and other Rotary projects in support of our local, national and international communities.  We also promote & encourage good fellowship among our members, their families and friends throughout the Rotary year with ongoing charitable projects and social engagements, as follows:-

Rotarian David Hughes, of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, was awarded an MBE 'For Services To Charity' in Her Majesty The Queen's New Year's Honours List 2016.

Congratulations David on a well deserved honour!

  • Friday 24th June 2016 - Annual Frank Baddilley Award & The Annual Elliott Davidson Music Award will be held at this Friday's meeting; with a warm welcome being tendered to Rotary wives & friends.
  • Friday 1st July 2016 - Presidential Induction - to witness Out-going Club President, Jim Lawrence PHF, handing over to In-coming Club President, Brian Straughan, for the year 2016-2017. The Guests of Honour will be Assistant Distrcit Governor (Group 3) Stewart Atkin and his wife Mrs Christine Atkin.  The Guest Speaker will be Allison Morgan of the National Garden Scheme (gardens open for charity).  All Rotarians, their wives, friends & family are cordially invited.   • Sunday 21st August 2016 - Rotary Boat Trip - from 1.00 - 4.00pm, Rotarians of Chester-le-Street Rotary Club, with wives, family & friends, are taking a Boat Trip on the River Tyne. Details can be obtained from Rotarian Alan Campbell, telephone: (0191) 388 3024, email: avenue@talktalk.net
  • Friday 2nd September 2016 - Induction as an Honorary Member, Lord James Joicey, 5th Baron of Chester-le-Street - instead of our usual Friday luncheon meeting, Rotarians of Chester-le-Street Rotary Club, with wives, family & friends, are having an 'away day' by bus to visit the Ford & Etal Estate of Lord Joicey, in Northumberland. (Go to the 'Photograph Gallery' to see the photographs).
  • Friday 30th September 2016 - Business Meeting & Annual 'Last Rose of Summer' Competition.   Members are encouraged to enter their best single rose from their gardens.  All proceeds to Club charities.
  • Friday/Sunday 7th - 9th October 2016 - Annual Conference 2016 - Rotary District 1030 held their annual conference in Harrogate, Yorkshire. 
  • Friday 14th October 2016 - 'Associate Membership' - as a way of improving Rotary membership, will be the topic presented by Guest Speaker, Past-President Ken Braithwaite, Rotary Club of Stokesley.   • Friday 11th November 2016 - 'Remembrance Day', our Guest Speaker will be Past-President John Tootill talking about 'The Armistice'.
  • Saturday 19th November 2016 - ABF (Northeast) & SSAFA (Tyne & Wear) are jointly holding a 'Somme Dinner 2016' at 7.00 pm in Newcastle Upon Tyne, to raise funds for both charities. Cost of the meal is £27.50 pp, inclusive of a Champagne Reception, wine & entetainment.  A great night out, so do come along with your family & friends.   • Friday 25th November 2016 - Special General Meeting.
  • Friday 2nd December 2016 - The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street are hosting a 'Big Band Night' at 7.00 for 7.30pm, at the Chiton Pub  Country Club, Black Boy Road, Fencehouses, Co Durham DH4 6PY. This includes Dinner at £22.50pp, and hear the music of the 'Bright Street Big Band'.  Come along with your family & friends and have a good night out.

  • Friday 16th December 2016 - 'Christmas Message' Luncheon Meeting - commencing at 11.30 am for a 12.15 pm start, with a three course lunch @ £20 per head, will be at Durham County Cricket Club, Chester-le-Street, where the 'Christmas Message' this year will be delivered by the Rev. Dr. Liz Kent. Rotarians wives/husbands, family & friends are welcome. Please note this week's meeting is not at our usual venue.   • Friday - 17th March 2017 - Club Council Meeting - will be held at 2.00 pm , immediately after the weekly Friday meeting ends. All Club Council members are requested to attend please.
  • Saturday 18th March 2017 - Rotary District 1030 - 'Young Musician Competition' commences at 2.00 pm at Duchess High School, Taylor Drive, Alnwick, Northumberland. A young pianist, Bolin Dai, aged 16 years, is competing sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.  In fact Bolin Dia won the District competition and goes on to the Regional competition in Edinburgh on Saturday 1st April 2017.  It will be a fun & fellowship day and members, family & friends are cordially invited to attend in support.  Please contact Past-President Bill Holden PHF, email: billbholden@aol.com or telephone: 01388 527 818, if you have any queries.
  • Monday 20th March 2017 - 'The Lucky Durhams' - is a play being presented by The Youth Connection Theatre Company, directed by Past-President Linda Watson PHF, on Monday, 20th March 2017, at 7.00 pm, in Cornerstones Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street.  Tickets cost £5 (including refreshments) and can be obtained from Cornerstones Office or telephoning (0191) 388 2826.   • Friday 24th March 2017 - a brief Business Meeting followed by the award of The Rose Trophy, by President Brian Straughan, to local Student, Luke Williams, for earning the highest academic achievement among Chester-le-Street Students. In addition to The Rose Trophy, which he can hold for a year, Luke also received a framed certificate and a cheque for £50. (Click here: to see photographs).
    Friday 24th March 2017 - a brief Business Meeting & Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) at which Past-President Bill Holden introduces Tom Ludlow, who will represent the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, as this year's RYLA Candidate. (See photograph right courtesy of Rotarian Brian Corker).
  • Friday 7th April 2017 - Guest Speaker: Mr Eric Bulmer,  Mr Bulmer is Chairman of Wardens, Warden of the Plumbers' Company, Durham City Freemen (Go to the 'Links' page to visit their website).
  • Friday 14th April 2017 - Good Friday (Easter) - no meeting.
  • Friday 21st April 2017 - Special General Meeting.
  • Saturday 29th April 2017 - 'James Etherington Musical Award' - promising young Musicians who are resident or attend an educational establishment within an area covered by the DH (Durham County) post codes, and who wish to further their training in singing or the playing of musical instruments, are invited to apply to take part in the 'James Etheringtom Musical Award'.  The competition is being held, commencing at 7.00 pm, in the Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.   • Saturday 17th June 2017 - 'President's Night' is in the planning stage.  All members, family & friends are invited to attend a celebrtatory evening which will be ful of of fun, fellowship, not to mention entertainment and a mega raffle.
  • Monday 7th - Friday 11th August 2017 - the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) - will be held at the Kingsway Outdoor Education Centre, Middleton-in-Teesdale. Tom Ludlow, a former winner of the Rotary Club's'Frank Baddilley Award' is taking part representing himself and the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.
