The Rotary Year for The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street began on 6th July 2018.

On Friday 6th July2018 - we inducted our new Club President: Rotarian David Lindley for the year 2018 - 2019.

President David's chosen charity for the forthcoming Rotary year is:

  • Youth Connection Theatre Company - Youth Connection Theatre Company, registered charity 1134188, is an amateur theatre company based at Chester-le-Street, County Durham. It was formed in 1984, by senior students, past students and other members of the community. The group still has the same aims; to enable as many young people as possible to experience a wide variety of Drama, and have fun along the way. Credits to date include performances at the Edinburgh Festival, tours of France, Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Russia, participation in a major International Drama Festival and performances at several major professional London Theatres including, the Royal National. 
  • St Cuthbert's Hospice, Durham City.

Throughout the year The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street will be organising events to raise funds for the President's chosen charity, and other Rotary projects in support of our local, national and international communities.  We also promote & encourage good fellowship among our members, their families and friends throughout the Rotary year with ongoing charitable projects and social engagements, as follows:-

THE ROTARY YEAR 2018 - 2019

  • Saturday 13th January 2018 - Rotary District 1030 Music Competition - was held in Alnwick under the auspices of the Rotary Club of Alnwick and was well supported. The winner of the French Horn section was Christopher Winkless-Clarke, a young musician sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street. Well done Christopher!  A look forward: the Regional Final, which Christopher has qualified to enter, takes place at the "Royal Conservatoire of Scotland", Renfrew Street, Glasgow, on Sunday 22nd April, from where the winners attend the National Final, at the James Watt Theatre, Heriot Watt University, Riccarton, Edinburgh on 19th May 2018.
  • Friday 26th January 2018 - Club Council Meeting at 10.00 am at our usual venue, 'The Whitehills', and all Club Council members are requested to attend. Our regular luncheon meeting will follow at 12.00 for 12.15 pm, which will be a Business meeting.
  • Monday 29th January 2018 - attend with wives, the Rotary Club of Stanley's meeting at 7.00 pm for a meal & Guest Speaker at the Causey Arch Inn, near Stanley.
  • Saturday 3rd February 2018 - 'The James Etherington Music Awards', was held at 7.00 pm in the Methodist Church, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham, for promising young musicians who wish to further their musical careers.  'The James Etherington Music Awards' are sponsored by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street.  Photograph (right): The Winner: Will Fox (Pianist) receiving the James Etherington Trophy and his cheque for £350 from Bob Watson BEM, Past-Chairman, The James Etherington Music Trust.  Click here: to view the Photographic Gallery of the whole event and the other Awardees.
  • Thursday 15th February 2018 - District 1030 Quiz Competition - at 6.45 pm at Hallgarth, The Manor Hotel, Pittington, Co Durham.
  • Saturday 24th February 2018 - Collection In Aid Of SSAFA, Tyne & Wear Branch, will be held by members of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, aided by their wives, at Dobbies Garden Centre, Durham Road, Chester-le-Street.
  • Friday 2nd March 2018 - Weekly Meeting this Friday was cancelled due to very inclement weather.
  • Friday 9th March 2018 - is our next Weekly Lunchtime Meeting.
  • Friday 23rd March 2018 - Club Council Meeting at 10.00 am at our usual venue, 'The Whitehills', and all Club Council members are requested to attend. Our regular luncheon meeting will follow at 12.00 for 12.15 pm, which will at which we will present or anual 'Rose Trophy', certificate & cheque to the Chester-le-Street Student who has shown the best academic achievement.   • Friday 25th May 2018 - 90th Charter Anniversary & President's Night 2018 of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street will be held, at 7.00 pm (Reception) for a 7.30 pm start, at The Chilton Country Hotel, Fencehouses, Co Durham DH4 6PY.  Click here: to view the President's Night Photographs.
  • Saturday 2nd June 2018 - Charity Ball In Aid of 'Youth Connection' - includes Canapes and a Two Course Meal, also Live Entertainment, Raffle and Disco. The Ball, was Formal (black tie. Ladies as appropriate) was held in the Riverside Suite & Lounge, of the Emirates Riverside County Cricket Ground, Chester-le-Street. Tickets: £32 Adults, £15 under 12s.
  • Saturday 23rd June 2018 - 40th Charter Anniversary & President's Night of our daughter club, the Rotary Club of Birtley, at 'The Angel View Hotel', Gateshead. Deails from their Club Secretary:
  • Friday 29th June 2018 - Annual 'Frank Baddilley' Awards - were made to three local Chester-le-Street Students who had made the most signicant contributions to caring in the local Community; Mr Callum Wilkinson of Fyndoune School, Mr Harry Brown of Hermitage School, and Mr Jack Wright of Park View School, all Chester-le-Street Schools. For their sterling work each Student was awarded a personalised framed certificate and a cheque for £50. To view the photographs of the event: Click Here.
  • Saturday 30th June 2018 - 'The Lucky Durhams' - The First Day of The Somme - is a play, by David William Watson, being performed by the Youth Connection Theatre Company, at 7.30 pm in Chester-le-Street Community Centre, 5 Newcastle Road, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham DH3 3TS. Tickets £7 (including refreshments).
  • Sunday 1st July 2018 - 'Ins & Outs' Luncheon - an invitation to all Rotarians including Outgoing and Incoming Club Presidents, Past and Incoming District Officers, Rotarians, their Partners, family and friends to celebrate the achievements of the past year and to launch the new Rotary year. Please join District Governor-elect Stewart Atkin & Christine in the Bishops Suite at Ramside Hotel, Durham H1 1TD, for lunch and the official Handover with lots of time for fellowship. Places are available for members of your Club & family on a first come first served basis. Please book early and ensure that your Club is represented at this important event in the Rotary calendar. Venue: Bishops Suite Ramside Hall Hotel Durham DH1 1TD. Reception: 12.00 (Noon) followed by a two course carvery lunch at 12.30pm. Fellowship until 3.30pm. Dress: Casual – Regalia not mandatory. Cost: Adults £20.00 – Children £10.00.
  • Friday 6th July 2018 - Hand-over/Take-over Day - President-elect David Lindley PHF was inducted as President of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street for the Rotary Year 2018 - 2019, by outgoing President Kevin Jobson. Present were most Club members, the District Governor Stewart Atkin & Assistant District Governor Phil Hopps, both of Rotary District 1030, who were making an official visit to our Club.   • Friday 17th August 2018 - Donation to SSAFA Tyne & Wear Branch - the chosen charity for the rotary year 2017 - 2018 of the out-going President, Kevin Jobson, was SSAFA Tyne & Wear Branch, (website: https://www.ssafa.org.uk/tyne-wear). Cheque donations of £2,200.00 were made by Immediate Past-President, Kevin Jobson, to the Chairman of SSAFA Tyne & Wear Branch, Col. (retd) Jeremy G.W. Feggetter TD, DL, OStJ, FRCS. Past-President Kevin Jobson thanks all rotarians and non-rotarians for their efforts in participating in the fund-raising in support of SSAFA Tyne & Wear Branch.

  • Friday 31st August 2018 - Club Council Meeting at 10.30 am, at our usual venue. It is requested that all Club Council Members attend please. This will be followed by a Business Meeting at 12.15 (Noon) at our normal Friday Luncheon Meeting.
  • Friday 5th - Sunday 7th October 2018 - Annual District Conference - District Governor Stewart Atkin, held the Rotary District 1030 North East of England Annual District Conference at The Majestic Hotel, Harrogate, Yorkshire
  • Saturday 3rd November 2018 - 'War's End Concert' - presented by the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street in St Mary's & St Cuthbert's Parish Church, Chester-le-Street, to celebrate the end of WW1 and remember those who gave their lives in that war.  All proceeds from the Concert will go to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.  Click here: to see  the press release (.pdf).  See the photograph below by Helen Jobson:

The Concert was a great success, the Church was packed, almost to over-flowing, with people attending the Concert.

The Concert raised £3,000 in aid of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street thanks the people of Chester-le-Street and surrounding districts for their generosity and support.

  • Friday 7th December 2018 - 'War's End Concert' Cheque Presentation - at today's Luncheon Meeting President David Lyndley PHF presents a cheque for £3000, monies raised by the organising talents of Past-President Fred Richards & members of the Rotary Club of Chester-le-Street, through the very kind generosity of local members of the public, at the recent 'War's End Concert' in support of the RBL Poppy Appeal, to Major Eric Ingram MBE, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Tyne & Wear and County President Royal British Legion, Northumbria. The  'The James Etherington Music Awards' Successfully took place on Saturday 2nd February 2019,

First Place was awarded to  Felix Collins, Playing a Classical Guitar.

Three competitors were chosen as joint winners for Second Place

Friday 8th March Elliott Davidson Music Award

Isobel Grace, accompanied by her mother received, a Certificate of Merit, Trophy & Cheque, which were presented to her by President  David Lindley for outstanding music ability on percussion.

Isobel is a member of the NASNUT Brass Band.

In April 2019 I’m travelling to Greece to teach refugee children English as part of the Happy Caravan charity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I am seeking fundraising opportunities and looking for donors, as I aim to supply the organisation with educational materials, but also provide money in order for the children to go on school trips, and to continue running the school based across 2 different refugee camps in Greece.

Benjamin Williams, accompanied by his Mother and Father received, a Certificate of Merit, Trophy & Cheque, which were presented to him by President  David Lindley for outstanding Academic Achievement

Benjamin is a Student at the Hermitage Academy.

Friday May 10th Rotary Supporting Young Talent,

Chester le Street Methodist Church

From 19.00 hours till 21.30 hours.

The main entertainment provided by NAS/UWT Concert Brass Band with

Music From "The Last Night of The Proms" and "Old Northumbrian Songs"

Tickets were £6 to including refreshments in the Walter Best Hall

The event was held to raise funds to enable two students, both from the Hermitage Academy to attend a course to further their performing abilities.

Their duet was “A Million Dreams” from (The Amazing Showman)
