Our grateful thanks to Rotarian Bob Watson for organising the visit.

Rotary Club members were invited to visit the Digital Institute to see aspects of work currently being carried out.
The Digital Institute, Director Prof. Paul Watson, School of Computing Science, builds and supports multi-disciplinary digital research at the University and works closely with external organisations to access the latest developments and expertise in digital technologies.
During the visit, club members saw :-

  1.  3D Printing.  University innovators are using 3 D printers to turn computer data into physical objects, thus changing lives. The University is a leading centre for medical engineering and is involved in pioneering 3D printed replacement body parts.
  2. Driving Simulator.  This allows research into the effects of age on driving ability. Thus a series of in-car aids have been developed which aim to make the driving experience easier for an older driver, and therefore maintain the independence of the driver without compromising road safety.
  3. Virtual Reality Suite. This suite and its application software creates 3D images to represent real or abstract objects together with animation and sound if required.
